A Brand New Way To Call Your Friends
A new way of leaving messages for people on their mobile phones has been launched in Europe.
The Pinger service, already available in the United States, is different to Voicemail because people deliberately leave a voice message, rather than leaving one because a call is not answered.
Those behind Pinger say that it covers an existing gap in the market.
But the real key to success for Pinger may be that it will reduce costs for those wanting to leave messages for people overseas.
With the service, people ring a local phone number to leave a message, and the recipient responds to a text message and rings a local number to pick up the message.
The service is currently free, but Pinger hopes to make money in the future by selling targeted advertising on the text messages which alert people to calls.
Joe Minihane of Gadgets website T3.com said that the cost factor may help Pinger take off.
He told Sky News Online: “The concept seems a bit pointless: sending voice messages.
“But Pinger is actually a really neat service that bypasses the need to make expensive international calls or send texts that never get a response.
“Basically, you call a local number, say the name of the person you want to contact and leave a message. Nice and straightforward.
“That person then gets a text telling them they’ve got a message, how long it is and a local number to dial. This means they’ll only pay a local standard rate, rather than hefty roaming fees.
“It’s cheap and also means you can leave a more detailed and personal message than you could in a short, terse text.”
Co-Founder Joe Sipher said he hoped that Pinger would become “a new communications tool for millions”.
He told Sky News Online: “If you think about it, 20 years ago you didn’t have SMS or IM as communication tools. You lived just fine with calling on the phone and email.
“Now that SMS and IM are broadly accepted, did they replace other forms of communication completely. No, but they created their own space in your communications toolbelt because now it’s very clear when it’s a good time for a text or an IM.
“It’s clear to me that Pinger is for getting complex or emotive messages out to one or many people while you’re mobile.”
